Pre & Post Surgery Instructions

Before Surgery

  • If you were told you need an EKG, please contact your primary care physician or cardiologist and request that a copy be faxed as soon as possible to the surgery center. If you are having surgery at New Millennium Surgery Center, their fax number is (248) 281-0034.
  • Arrange for transportation to the facility. Your driver must be at least 18 years of age and remain at the facility during your surgery.
  • Arrange for someone to stay at home with you for at least 24 hours after surgery.
  • To reduce bleeding, bruising and help healing stop the following over-the-counter medications at least one (1) week prior to your surgery:
    • Vitamins
    • Supplements
    • Herbal supplements
    • Products containing Aspirin (if another doctor has instructed you to take aspirin daily to reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke, do not stop taking this medication until instructed to do so by the nurse or your physician)
    • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
    • Aleve
    • Arthritis medications
    • Diet pills
    • It is OK take Tylenol/Acetominophen products as needed

Pre-Operative Call

  • Expect a phone call from a registered nurse to review your health history and answer additional questions.
  • Make a note of any medications that the nurse may instruct you to stop (such as blood thinners) prior to your operation. Do not stop taking any prescription medications until you have been instructed to do so by the nurse or your physician. You may generally resume these medications the day after surgery.

Day Before Surgery

  • If your surgery is scheduled at New Millennium Surgery Center, please call the day prior to your surgery between the hours of 7:30am and 2:00pm to obtain your arrival time. If your surgery is scheduled on a Monday, call New Millennium Surgery Center on the Friday before your surgery. Their phone number is (248) 281-0028.
  • If your surgery is scheduled at any other surgery center or hospital, the facility will call you at least one day prior to your scheduled surgery date to give you your arrival time. If you have not received a call by 2:00pm the day before your scheduled surgery, please call our office at (248) 357-5100 and press the option for the surgery department for assistance.
  • STOP eating and drinking at midnight. This includes food, water, candy, gum, mints. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING the morning of your surgery.
  • DO NOT smoke for at least 24 hours before and after surgery. Smoking restricts blood flow which slows healing. The longer you refrain from smoking before and after your surgery, the faster you will heal.
  • Notify the surgery center or hospital if you develop a cold, sore throat, cough or other symptoms of illness prior to your scheduled surgery.
  • If you were instructed to have blood work drawn, please have it drawn by 10:00am the morning before your scheduled surgery.

  • You will be discharged when you are awake, discharge instructions have been reviewed with you and your companion, and recovery goals have been met. Recovery time averages 30 minutes.

After Discharge

You will be given specific discharge instructions on the day of surgery. However, the following limitations are common to all procedures. Please plan ahead to assist you in achieving the best surgical results.

Activity Limitations

  • First 24 hours: no driving, making important decisions or drinking alcohol
  • First 3 days: if required to use ice, you will be placing the ice pack on your eye(s) every hour that you’re awake for 15 minutes
  • First week: no bending forward at the waist, lifting more than 5 pounds or strenuous exercise
  • Do not expose your eyes to direct sunlight or sunbathe until approved by your doctor. Use sunglasses for protection.

General Expectations

  • Bruising, swelling and bloody drainage are expected. Bruising typically peaks within 3-4 days, but can take greater than 10 days to go away completely. Do not rub your eyes. Dab your eyes gently to remove any drainage and use the ice packs as directed to limit the swelling.
  • You may experience discomfort after surgery. This is normal. You may take regular or extra strength Tylenol, as directed.
  • Contacts may not be worn until approved by your physician.
  • It is important to make an appointment to see your doctor after surgery. If you were not given a post-operative appointment, please call the office at 248-357-5100.
  • Please be aware you may receive up to 3 bills after surgery: physician, facility (surgery center or hospital) and anesthesia.
